Bangkok is a vibrant and overwhelming city where most travellers begin their journey through Thailand. You can easily spend 3 days exploring the city and all that Bangkok has to offer. To get an even better impression of Bangkok, check out our Thailand Vlog in the link below! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-1b_30sNKU&t=1062s
1. Explore Bangkok by Tuk-Tuk
When in Thailand, you cannot ignore tuk-tuks; they are an essential part of the typical tourist experience. These compact, mobile trolleys take you from point A to point B within minutes, zig-zagging through the bustling traffic.
TIP: When it comes to bargaining, Tuk Tuk drivers are tough and stubborn. If you can't agree on a reasonable price, grab a taxi or ask the next Tuk Tuk driver.
2. Eat like the locals!
You will often discover the best Thai food in markets and small roadside eateries. Here you can enjoy delicious curries, Pad Thai, green papaya salad, chicken with cashew nuts and plenty of other tasty options, all at an affordable price!
TIP: If you are not a fan of coriander, do not hesitate to ask if they can omit this ingredient. Coriander is often the base for many Thai dishes, so adjusting it to your taste is common and gladly done.
3. Explore the canals by longtail boat
When in Bangkok, a short trip through the canals on the distinctive long-tailed boat is a must. Nonthaburi, also known as the 'Venice of the East', slows down Bangkok's hectic pace for a while. It offers a way to experience the city outside the shopping malls, markets and the constant sound of honking cars.
Although the water is sometimes murky and thick with pollution, the area still retains its picturesque character in many places. Floating markets, winding houses, ancient bridges and elaborate temples form the picturesque backdrop along the waterfront as you sail by in a cloud of smoke.
4. Visit Bangkok's markets
Bangkok is the queen of markets, so make sure you keep an eye on all the small side streets while walking or driving through the city, because before you know it you'll stumble upon a bustling market.
Markets in Bangkok come in all flavours and sizes, ranging from small local vegetable markets to huge markets with souvenirs, trendy clothes and food stalls. Locals love hanging out at these lively markets, so if you see a market with lots of locals, you've come to the right place.
TIP: Haggling is common in Thailand. Aim to pay 40% off the original price.
5. Wat Arun
Probably one of Bangkok's most impressive temples is Wat Arun. This temple is easily visible from across the river, partly due to its height of 75 metres. To visit Wat Arun, you can take a ferry for just THB 4, and the entrance fee is THB 50.
TIP: If you want to climb to the top with a fantastic panoramic view of the city and the river, make sure you go between 08:30 - 18:00 as the temple closes after 18:00.
6. Drink a smoothie!
In Thailand, smoothies with fresh fruit are a popular phenomenon and you will be able to find them everywhere. They come in all kinds of flavours and are not only delicious but also affordable. You can enjoy smoothies with fresh fruit at any market.
TIP: Most stalls add sugar water to make the smoothies even tastier, so ask for without sugar!😉
7. Explore Bangkok's temples
Besides Wat Arun, there are many more temples to visit. Also be sure to visit Wat Benchamabophit for the most magical sunrise. Wat Po, with its 46-metre-long reclining golden Buddha and Wat Pryoon, where you can even feed turtles.
TIP: All temples require covering over shoulders and knees.
8. Shopping malls
Another activity worth doing is visiting one of the many shopping malls. We enjoyed exploring Thai malls because of the unique shops you won't find elsewhere in Europe. There are also many well-known retail chains like Zara and H&M, and on the upper floors you will often find elaborate cinemas and dining areas!
